Welcome to this course, and thank you for investing your time to learn more about research integrity and ethics in relation to citizen science, and how this connects to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This training course starts by examining the concepts of ethics and research integrity from a theoretical lens before moving on to a very practical exploration of how these concepts can be embedded within citizen science practice and used to deliver on the SDGs. We bring together ethics, research integrity and SDGs in one course because we see that these topics are related. The SDGs are a response to a global crisis where our planet has not been protected and where there is overwhelming evidence of inequality, gender bias, weak institutions and missed opportunities of partnerships to work together to improve our world – for now, and for future generations. The course draws on theoretical evidence of neglect – and the great potential of the human for honesty, integrity and authenticity. If you are a researcher concerned with ethics and integrity, a citizen science project leader keen to embed ethical practices in your work, a scholar wanting to know more about tools and techniques for authentic learning or someone working for an NGO engaged in grassroots development – this course is for you. We draw on expertise from anthropologists and philosophers as well as researchers and development practitioners from many disciplines,  – mainly (but not exclusively) from the water sciences. In so doing we are bridging the divide between the humanities and the ‘hard’ sciences.
