Promoting a more just world
The United Nations Secretary‐General’s synthesis report on the Post‐2015 Development Agenda proposed one universal and transformative agenda for sustainable development, underpinned by rights and with people and the planet at the centre (UN 2014). At the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were born, replacing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which started a global effort in 2000 to tackle the indignity of poverty and to promote a more just world. The 17 SDGs endorsed by late September 2015 are intended to transform our world by addressing the social, economic and environmental challenges faced by the global community, with all countries and stakeholders acting in collaborative partnership.
