Question:

  • Can you identify these four characters?
  • What is significant about the following picture – and how does it relate to our interest in ethics, virtue and justice?

Answer:

We see here the famous singers Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan and John Lennon. What do these four very different singers have in common? Perhaps it is that their lyrics have everything to do with being true to oneself and having integrity. And in the case of these singers - it is the ability to express oneself and to convey an authentic message to others. The soulful music is a genuine personal expression about what matters most in the world to each of these people.  This is about integrity and being genuine. It thus has significance for the topics covered in the rest of our course as we look at ideas of authentic learning and integrity within the context of citizen science and the democratisation of knowledge. This also links in well to the discussion we have had above in the self reflection exercise, where being true to oneself also means acknowledging difference and diversity.  It is acceptable to express our own views as long as we are not offending anyone else.
