We turn now to this current citizen science project taking place in one of the poorest provinces of South Africa – the Limpopo (see map below). This project addresses a hydrological data void – where government officials are unable to reach the remote rural wells and rely on citizen scientists to transmit data - on groundwater, rainfall and river flows -  from their smartphones onto a web-based citizen science app which they can then access.
