Course overview: What will you learn?
"Here we go on another excellent adventure", written on a bench in a park.
The training has 8 sections with videos, texts, worksheets and links for you to get a real sense of storytelling. Great invitees are here for sharing their experiences and deep reflections about the bonds between stories, people, communication and science.
- Section 1: Introduction
- Section 2: Storytelling for citizen science
Introduction to the meaning of storytelling and its use in communication actions, that range from education to marketing and how they can be applied in citizen science.
- Section 3: Creative writing to get you started
We have to be open to letting the creative juices flow and “see” the stories that are underlying our work. To set the tone for this, we will practice creative writing and you will write a poem and some prose to tell your story.
- Section 4: Crafting your story
“Do the verb” means to write, to prototype, to draft, to get into the flow and to start building up confidence. We share techniques to identify the elements in your story and how to orchestrate them in a compelling way.
- Section 5: Communicating your story
Once you have the marrow and script of your story, how will you share it with the world? There are multiple ways to do this, and our invitation is to see what resonates with your project and team.
- Section 6: Summary and self-assessment
- Section 7: Further information - other sources of information and further learning on citizen science
- Section 8: Sources and acknowledgements - a list of sources that are used in the course.
When finalising these sections, we hope you will:
- Understand the value of stories and how they can help you connect with people when using it for communicating citizen science;
- Identify the elements that make a compelling story and be able to discover them in your project or your experiences
- Explore possible narratives that are valuable to your context
- Craft possible plots and stories and a way to share them in a compelling way
