This is a free, 1 hour course which will provide you with basic knowledge about citizen scientists’ rights and obligations in gathering data, analysing data, and co-authoring research papers. This is not a course for complete beginners, but an overview of citizen science will be enough.
In this module, a special emphasis will be put on handling sensitive data (such as medical or personal) and ethical requirements in gathering information.
This course is aimed at the citizen scientist or volunteer in a citizen science project, who would like to understand more about their legal rights and obligations. You will need a basic overview of citizen science, but no in-depth knowledge is required.
By the end of this course, you will be able to better understand:
- the legal status of the citizen scientist,
- the importance of ethics in gathering and analysing scientific data,
- the rights and obligations of volunteers in a project.
